Electrical Design

Ensuring Safe, Reliable, and Efficient Power Systems

Electrical systems are the backbone of any modern marine vessel — and in retrofit projects, ensuring that new or modified systems integrate safely and efficiently is critical. Kennedy Marine’s electrical design services focus on building robust, compliant, and operationally efficient systems through precise engineering and rigorous safety calculations.

Key Components of Electrical Design:

Whether we’re upgrading power distribution, adding new equipment, or installing advanced control systems, our electrical design process ensures that every component functions safely under all possible operational conditions.

Correct cable sizing is fundamental to safe and efficient electrical operation. We calculate cable sizes based on:

  • Current‐carrying capacity under both normal and peak load conditions
  •  Voltage drop limits across cable runs to ensure stable performance
  • Thermal conditions specific to marine environments (including enclosed trays, temperature, and bundling)

Proper cable sizing ensures cables operate within safe thermal limits, reduces energy losses, and prevents dangerous overheating or fire hazards.

We calculate and specify the correct sizes and trip characteristics for circuit breakers, fuses, and other protective devices based on:

  • Load profiles
  • Short circuit analysis
  • Discrimination and coordination studies

This ensures that in the event of a fault, only the affected section of the system is isolated — maintaining safety without compromising continuity of operation.

Our electrical design includes thorough load analysis to ensure power distribution is balanced across phases and sources. We identify peak loads, diversity factors, and redundancy requirements to prevent overloading and ensure power quality.

We perform detailed short‐circuit calculations to identify worst‐case fault currents and ensure that:

  • All components (cables, breakers, switchgear) can withstand and isolate faults
  •  System protection schemes are correctly coordinated
  •  Arc flash hazards are minimized

All designs comply with relevant marine electrical standards, such as:

  • IEC 60092 (Electrical Installations on Ships)
  • Classification Society Requirements (DNV, ABS, Lloyd’s, etc.)
  •  SOLAS and IMO regulations
